
Martin Hilský
Martin Hilský is a Czech literary scholar, professor of English literature, and above all the most renowned Czech translator of William Shakespeare’s works. Born in 1943, he has devoted his entire professional life to British literature. He teaches at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, and his translations of Shakespeare’s plays are regarded as modern, linguistically vibrant, and exceptionally faithful to the original.
Martin Hilský has translated the complete dramatic works of William Shakespeare, and his texts are regularly staged in Czech theatres – from the National Theatre to regional companies. In addition to his translation work, he is active as a lecturer, a promoter of literature, and an author of scholarly publications.
