The action of the tragicomic play takes place in the provincial town of Mordasova, where Marya Moskalova lives with her young daughter Zinaida. The mother’s only aspiration is that her daughter successfully marries. A potential suitor is a rich but old Prince K., who resembles a "dead man on springs". However, no matter how hard the daughter and mother try, due to his memory problems, Prince K. constantly changes his mind. Although the play is full of comic situations, in the end you come to think that the tragedy of the situation might not be overcome.
