Евальд Шорм

Evald Schorm was a Czech director, screenwriter and playwright, one of the key figures of the Czechoslovak New Wave. He studied directing at FAMU and became known primarily for his author-driven films, characterized by a deep interest in human conscience and moral dilemmas. Alongside filmmaking, he devoted himself extensively to theatre, where he became one of the most respected directors of his generation. During the period of normalization he focused mainly on theatre work. He directed at the Činoherní klub, Divadlo Na zábradlí, Semafor Theatre, the State Theatre in Brno and the National Theatre in Prague. Among his notable stage productions were The Brothers Karamazov, Uncle Vanya, The Government Inspector and Hamlet, admired for their psychological depth and powerful atmosphere. His best-known films include Everyday Courage and Return of the Prodigal Son. Evald Schorm is regarded as one of the most important figures of Czech culture in the second half of the 20th century.
